Beyond the Classroom: Northwest Career College Helps 204 Student Families Prepare for the School Year
Annual initiative provides 435 grade-specific school supply kits for the children of 204 student families, reinforcing the college's commitment to student success beyond the classroom.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Nearly 16,000 school supplies stretched across tables inside Northwest Career College as employees formed an assembly line—not for a classroom assignment, but for hundreds of children whose parents are pursuing an education of their own.
In total, the college purchased 15,973 individual school supply items—including more than 5,200 pencils, 2,200 glue sticks, 1,700 dry-erase markers, and 435 wired headphones—ensuring every child receives approximately three dozen classroom essentials tailored to their grade level.
The initiative comes as families continue to face rising back-to-school expenses. According to the National Retail Federation, families with children in elementary through high school are expected to spend an average of $863.86 on clothing, shoes, school supplies, and electronics this year, with total nationwide spending projected to reach a record $43.3 billion.
Unlike traditional donation drives, every item included in the school supply kits was purchased by Northwest Career College. Employees from across the institution then volunteered their time to hand-assemble each kit before distribution to students' families.

"Many are working, raising families, and pursuing an education to create better opportunities for the people they love. When we can help reduce some of the financial pressure that comes with back-to-school season, we're helping our students stay focused on what matters most: building a brighter future for themselves and their families."
The annual Back-to-School Supply Drive reflects the college's belief that student success extends beyond the classroom. Many Northwest Career College students balance employment, parenting, and academic responsibilities simultaneously, making the cost of preparing children for a new school year another significant household expense.
This year's school supply kits also reflect how classrooms have evolved. Alongside traditional supplies such as notebooks, binders, crayons, and pencils, every child receives a pair of wired headphones—a classroom essential that has become commonplace as technology continues to play an integral role in K–12 education following the COVID-19 pandemic.
"School supply lists look very different than they did just a few years ago," Kenny said. "Today's students aren't just expected to bring notebooks and pencils; they're expected to have the technology accessories needed to participate in digital learning. We wanted to make sure our families were prepared for the classroom as it exists today."
Distribution is currently underway, with 204 student families receiving supplies and additional requests placed on a waitlist as the college continues serving as many families as possible.
The Back-to-School Supply Drive is one of several annual initiatives funded by Northwest Career College to support students and their families throughout the year. Later this fall, the college will once again host its Thanksgiving Meal Drive, providing complete holiday meals to student families, followed by its annual Holiday Toy Drive, helping ensure children experience the joy of the season.
"Education changes lives, but success is built on stability," Kenny added. "Supporting our students means recognizing that they're also parents, caregivers, employees, and members of our community. When we invest in the well-being of their families, we're investing in their ability to achieve their educational and career goals."
