Student Reporting

Congress recently passed a bill called the CARES Act in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a part of this bill, the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund was created to provide colleges and universities with Emergency Financial Aid Grants to be paid directly to students for “expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus”. These include eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and childcare.

Northwest Career College has completed and submitted its application to receive the funds that were allocated to our institution by the Department of Education. Along with this application, the institution signed and returned a Certification and Agreement to the Department of Education stating that it intends to use no less than 50% of the of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. The institution has received $1,192,076.00 in funding that will be used exclusively for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

On March 16, 2020, Northwest Career College transitioned all on-campus classes to Zoom classes in support of the government’s recommendations for social distancing. Therefore, the institution determined all students whose Last Date of Attendance was on or after March 16, 2020 have had their educational experiences impacted due to COVID-19. As a result of this determination, all Northwest Career College students who have been formally accepted into their programs of study as of May 18, 2020 and whose Last Date of Attendance was on or after March 16, 2020 will be automatically eligible to receive an equal allocation of Emergency Financial Aid Grants, as long as they are eligible to file a FAFSA and were enrolled in a diploma or degree program. Each student in this population has been scheduled to receive a $1,000.00 Emergency Financial Aid Grant. Furthermore, because Northwest Career College plans to continue operating classes in a virtual environment for the 5/18/2020 and 6/1/2020 terms, any students who matriculate into their programs during these start dates will be receiving a $1000.00 Emergency Financial Aid Grant.

Since the time that NCC’s CARES Act policy was first published, Northwest Career College has updated the amount of the Emergency Financial Aid Grants that were distributed for any students who matriculated into their programs for the 5/18/2020 and 6/1/2020 terms to $1,000.00.

Northwest Career College completed its Certification and Agreement and is required to disclose the total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of 30 days following receipt of these funds, and every 45 days thereafter. Furthermore, the institution is required to disclose the total number of students who are eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act. All eligible students have received emails and phone calls notifying them of their eligibility to receive an Emergency Financial Aid Grant. Any student who is not in contact with Northwest Career College within 90 days from the institution’s first attempt to contact them will forfeit their eligibility to receive these funds.

We hope that you and your family are staying safe and healthy during this time, and we look forward to seeing you all back on campus soon.

Sincerely,
The NCC Executive Team
