The Different Ways We Communicate

In a recent class, we were discussing various communication types, both verbal and nonverbal. We discussed the difference between the two and how in the medical field we must be cognizant of how each is used. Also discussed was tone and how tone adds depth to the communication. Tone can add much to communication, shaping how the message is conveyed and received.

With this in mind, have you ever you listened to yourself communicate and see what tone you are using? Bored communicators often have flat sounding voices which may convey apathy or lack of interest. When we are excited, the tone of our voice may increase as volume and pitch increase.

Think back to a time when you had what you considered to be a good teacher or instructor. Did the tone of voice change as they communicated with the class? Listen as a salesperson gives their pitch; their tone will change as they speak. One of the best examples of how tone is effectively used is by politicians and preachers. Each uses volume and tone effectively to communicate their message.

The tone of our voice can shape communication with patients: we can make them calm, patient, comfortable and better ready for their visit with the doctor. Be mindful of tone and also how you use nonverbal communication in your conversations with patients as each can shape the outcome for them.

At Northwest Career College, each instructor strives to communicate with their students in a tone and manner in keeping with that of a healthcare professional.
