To learn the best massage techniques so you can help people relax, reduce stress, and become healthier individuals, consider attending the massage therapy school at Northwest Career College. We teach several methods and techniques of massage that any aspiring massage therapist should know. Some of these include:

Basic Massage: A general massage is not aimed at relieving any specific pain or tension, but is instead used to relieve stress throughout the body. Areas that may receive more focus are the shoulders, neck, upper arms, lower back, upper legs, and along the spine. These areas, and in particular the shoulders, are where most people carry their stress, and thus is where the muscles may need focused treatment.

Deep Tissue Techniques of the Lower Body: This type of massage therapy is most useful for clients who experience chronic aches or pains in the legs. The motions and movements of deep tissue massages are essentially the same as those of a basic massage. Because deep tissue massages are designed to reach connective tissue and muscles that lie under layers of surface muscle and tissue, more pressure is needed and the movements are slowed considerably.

Medical Massage: Medical massages, like deep tissue massages, are targeted at relieving very specific pain and tightness in the body. The techniques used may vary, but the important aspect of a medical massage is its direct focus toward curing or relieving a specific symptom.

Sports Massage: This type of massage therapy is designed to assist athletes of all kinds, as the name suggests. The movements used will differ from basic massages in that they will focus most heavily at the area of the body most utilized or stressed by the athlete.

Shiatsu: Related to ancient traditional medicine, this massage form primarily uses the fingers to massage the areas along a person’s meridian lines. The massage is designed to encourage the flow of Qi, or vital energy, throughout the body.
