I recently went to a doctor’s office and had a rather lack luster experience when checking in. When I approached the front desk there was another patient checking in so I stood back, waiting to be called. Shortly I saw a hand come out of the window and a flat voice say “Over here.”

 

I walked up to the window and said “Hi” and was greeted with “Patient’s name?”

 

I gave the name and once again the hand came out of the window for the ID cards in mine. Cards taken and a clipboard emerged with attached paper and I heard “Have the patient fill out the highlighted areas and there is a copay, swipe your card.”

 

Card was swiped, forms completed and returned without another word.

 

A very cold experience. Most patients don’t want to go to the doctor’s office. They are often sick, in pain and downright upset. What can we do to help the situation?
